Naturalist, adventurer and Fortean author Ivan Terence Sanderson coined the term ‘globster’ in 1962, to describe strange masses of organic tissue washed ashore by ocean tides. In Edo Period Japan, the game of Hyakumonogatari – or one hundred stories – was a popular pastime. A hundred candles in blue lanterns were lit and placed on a table before a mirror. When the last candle was blown out it was said that a horned blue spirit, Aoandon, would manifest in the mirror.

Following the demise of Cryptozoology (published by the now-defunct International Society of Cryptozoology), there has been no peer-reviewed scientific journal devoted to cryptozoology for quite some time. Consequently, the Journal of Cryptozoology has been launched to remedy this situation and fill a notable gap in the literature of cryptids and their investigation.
