I hope that people reading this book have as much fun as I did writing it. I was inspired by Douglas Botting’s biography of my hero Gerald Durrell, telling the story of the great man’s life with wit and aplomb and was not afraid to reveal all the facets of his remarkable life – warts and all. This is my version.
Jon Downes started his lifelong paths as a naturalist and a cryptozoologist as a child in Hong Kong in the 1960s. This is his story but it is also the story of one of the last generations of children brought up in the British Empire, when it was still a global entity upon which the sun had not yet set.
