No its not Megalodon

There is an interesting news story today about the largest Great White shark ever tagged being reported off the coast of Atlantic City. Whenever there is a particularly big great white shark report, people start speculating that it is a surviving Megalodon. For most people of my generation, the idea of surviving Megalodons comes from a very minor sub plot in Peter Benchley’s seminal novel Jaws which I first read in 1975. These days we know far more about how Megalodon behaved, and – indeed – about the morphology oOf this prehistoric shark, and one is unlikely to find a reputable scientist who would speculate that it has survived to the present day.
