Fears of the legendary and violent chupacabra have returned after a herd of goats was slain in the middle of the night.
It is a mythical creature well-known in folklore across the Americas.
Its name, which translates to “goat sucker” in English, comes from the animal’s purported vampirism as the chupacabra is said to attack and drink the blood of livestock.
Physical descriptions of the creature vary and there have been no reported sightings of the creature for over a year.
But two livestock attacks in the same area in less than a week have led farmers to believe the demonic beast is back.
The first attack took place at a farm in Zaragoza in Coahuila State, Mexico, close to the border with the US.
Twelve goats were found dead on 6 February.
Several others were found barely alive.
The farmer said the animals had strange marks on their bodies with no signs of a normal predatory attack.
Another incident took place at the nearby El Italiano Ranch on 10 February.
Farm owner José Fraga Ramírez said he found a dozen dead sheep in their pen at dawn.
Footage shows numerous mangled carcasses on the ground.
Some untouched animals appear to have frozen to death on the spot, apparently killed by the shock of the mysterious attack.
Fraga said several surviving members of the flock appeared terrified.
He said the strangest thing was that his guard dogs did not detect a thing.
The farmer stated: “This is not normal, my dogs would have barked, they would have defended the flock.
“But it’s as if something had paralysed them.”
The two attacks prompted locals to suspect that the chupacabra had returned to the area.
There has not been a sighting of the mythical beast in the Mexican region for over two decades.
Investigating authorities said it was more likely that the animals were killed by coyotes or a pack of wild dog.
But livestock owners aren’t so sure.
According to reports, farmers have warned the authorities that they will take matters into their own hands if the responsible creature is not captured soon.
They have reportedly erected stronger fences around their livestock in response to the alleged demonic attacks.
In October 2023, a group of Brazilian hunters claimed they shot the mysterious beast in a forest, as reported by NeedToKnow.
They filmed what they said was a chupacabra’s dead body in Guia Lopes da Laguna, west of São Paulo.
They came across the vampiric creature while hunting wild boar on the edge of town.
One hunter said they chased the beast before their hunting dogs fought with it.
He then claimed he shot chupacabra dead.
The group explained that they filmed the video as proof of the monster’s demise.
However, sceptics said it was probably a decomposing howler monkey.
Howler monkeys are native to South and Central American forests and are commonly found in the area.
Reports also said that the animal appeared to be dead for several days and not a fresh kill, as claimed by the hunters.
There have been numerous alleged sightings of chupacabra in the Americas since the 1970s, including as far north as Maine in the US and as far south as Chile.
All reported sightings have been disregarded as anecdotal and lacking evidence.
