A PECULIAR FELID FROM THE CONGO

Spotted Lions | GeorgiaBeforePeople

I found this story in the Dundee Evening Telegraph of April 16th 1908:

A Strange Animal for the Zoo

“The parentage of a new animal which has arrived at London from the Congo is to be investigated at the Zoological Gardens. It is thought to be a hybrid – between a lioness and a spotted cat. In build and size it resembles an adult lioness but is irregularly spotted . The general hue of the body is tawny, and the markings differ greatly in size and character. The face is stippled with black, and down the back is a row of dark markings, like the disconnected links of a chain. Hybrids between larger cats bred in captivity are not uncommon ,but wild bred hybrids are exceedingly rare. The animal, which is to undergo scientific examination,is fairly quiet.”
