A Gigantic Bird in Florida

I found the following story in the May 1961 issue of Fate.It concerns the sighting of a bird with a wing spread of about 55 feet above Floridas Tamiami Trail. Here is an extract from the article: " Fishermen,women and others around Floridas Tamiami Trail in mid-winter were reporting a gigantic bird that ,at this writing,had not been identified. Eric Harnew of Miami said he saw a bird at Matheson Hammock Park that was bigger than anything he`d ever seen before. “It was flapping those huge wings and making a kind of rushing sound,” he said…One unidentified woman was said to have become hysterical after seeing a bird as big as a small airplane. Another lady told John Morton of the Miami Herald that the bird she saw “looked like a big vulture…wingspread about 55 feet…”
